Smart Move!

I got to hand it to my boss. He’s learned the best way to deliver orders to me that he knows will make me riled. Rather than to my face — which is guaranteed to evoke an instant scowl, annoyed response and an arguement back from me explaining why the particular dork ass thing that he wants me to do is completely unreasonable — he does it by email, to keep him occupied while he travels during one of his 10 or so week long outings to far off places that he makes during the course of the year. Meanwhile, I’m trusted/expected to hold down the fort/lab, answer my own damn questions pertaining to research regulations and neurological well-being of my subjects (which my background in physics makes me more than qualified to do) and of course, in his absence get more done than I do in his presence.

He would like for me to do a small “favor” for him and stay employed at my job right up until the first day of grad school. My staying will help my replacement to have a smooth transition in to my position. Hmm, let me think about that… 2 months paid vacation w/out my life consuming job hanging over my head or the stress of working, training someone new, moving, and orienting myself for grad school all at the same time (in the span of two months, mind you) to make things convenient for him. Please let me know what you think I should do. I’m having a hard time making a decision here.

Boring stuff really. Not much to tell. One time a tree was struck by lightning not ten feet from me. It like, exploded, and the blast knocked me over! I was okay though. Another time I got my pinky caught in a pipe vice on a drilling rig. The vice nearly severed it--that was kind of exciting I guess. Oh yes, and one time I was sued for 3 million dollars. Top that..!

Compromise. Tell him that you need x-amount of time (3-4 weeks seems reasonable) to get settled for school, and that he needs to get your replacement here in enough time to train. Tell him that instead of the two months you’d planned, you’re willing to cut it to one month. Make it sound more like your doing him a favor (which you actually are).

That’s a fine sug Crapartist. The prol’m is: bossyboy doesn’t have any control over when my replacement can start. He wouldn’t have to ask me to stay at my job in the first place if he did (he’d have her start in May so that I can take off in Aug). I wonder, with her immigration processing and all, if she would even be able to start by the time my school begins in the fall anyway.

Thanks for your support Great Sandwich and jkf. I’m going to follow your suggestion GS… just substituting Austin TX for Europe though. I doubt Europe and I would get along too well with my developed Americentricity through living my entire lifetime without travelling east of the Mississip. “Europe? isn’t that like the 47th state?”
