I went to a graduate student happy hour last night. Man, as I suppose is the case with any department, the politics here are intense. I say to myself “you don’t need to get caught up in all of that. Just do as you’re supposed to do and no one will have a problem with you and you will not have any problems with anyone else…”
…right.

Holy moley! You aren’t kidding! I’m finding that there aren’t any secrets in grad school.
And it’ll feel like highschool all over again too. Now the popular kids are the smart ones, so get in there.
It already does feel like High School. I don’t want to be a “smart one”, I don’t want to be popular; I just want the competitiveness to END. I think this will only happen AFTER each of us has been reamed and every ounce of pride has been stripped from us.
I’m so sorry to say that in my law school experience, they stripped us of our pride, dignity and souls, and then made us even more competitive than we had been before, biting and scratching each others’ eyes out for jobs and positions and court decisions. I guess you can count yourself lucky at least that you aren’t doing that. Perhaps you can at least figure out how to stay above the fray.
