What’s the difference between venting frustrations, about a particular person, to those you trust, and gossiping (or more extremely, slandering)? To me there is no difference. And I cannot talk about others negatively, without getting a bad pain in my stomach.

I’d say there is a difference and it’s mostly in your reason for discussing the person/issue. If you’re gaining some sort of joy in slamming that person and you expect that information to be then used negatively, it’s gossip. If you need to confidently and productively talk about something/someone to solve a problem (whether it’s an internal problem/issue within yourself or a problem between you and the other party), it’s venting/counseling. The problem with the two is knowing the person you’re talking to and how they’ll use/abuse the information. Hopefully you feel like you can trust those that you vent (rather than gossip) to/with. Wow – I just used lots of slashes! :o)/;oP
